Dive Propulsion Vehicle Specialty
Real divers run daily Dive Propulsion Vehicle Specialty, one of the most fun and easiest specs to do “no finning’
DPVs offer a thrilling way for scuba divers to see a lot of underwater territory in a short amount of time. They scoot you through the water allowing you to glide over reefs, buzz around a large wreck or weave through a kelp forest. Whether making a shore or boat dive, a DPV is a great way to see more and have fun doing it.
If you’re at least 12 years old and a PADI Open Water Diver or higher, you can enroll in the PADI Diver Propulsion Vehicle course.
The PADI Diver Propulsion Vehicle course guides you in choosing the right DPV for you. You’ll make two dives and learn about:
- Maintaining your DPV.
- How to plan dives, including procedures for staying with your buddy.
- DPV-handling skills, such as making proper descents and ascents.
- Potential problems and ways to deal with them.
Of course, you’ll need a DPV along with your basic scuba equipment, these are included in your rental package.
Real Divers DPV’s are the Apollo AV2 model, the great thing about the Apollo AV2 is you can either ride it traditionally like in the photo or you can sit on it.
On the AV2 “if you feel the need the need for speed” you can sit on the DPV and ride it hands free which allows you to equalise your ears without coming off the power. The AV2 goes about 6 to 7 kmh which doesn’t sound fast until you are underwater on them especially in a drift dive. DPV’s also allow you to go to places that you haven’t been before on the dive site because you know you wouldn’t have the air supply to do the distance by just finning.
